Why Is My PC Running Slow?
A slow PC usually comes down to one of five things: too many programs running, limited storage or memory, background updates, malware, or aging hardware.
Start here:
1. Restart it
This clears stuck background processes and is the quickest first test.
2. Check what’s using resources
Press `Ctrl + Shift + Esc` to open Task Manager. Look for apps using unusually high CPU, Memory, or Disk. Close anything you recognize that you don’t need.
3. Free up storage
A nearly full system drive can make Windows sluggish. Aim to keep at least 15–20% free. Empty the Recycle Bin, remove unused apps, and move large files off the drive if needed.
4. Reduce startup apps
In Task Manager, open Startup apps and disable non-essential programs. This especially helps if the PC takes ages to become usable after signing in.
5. Let updates finish
Windows, drivers, cloud syncing, and antivirus scans can temporarily use a lot of disk and CPU. Check whether an update or scan is actively running before assuming something is broken.
6. Scan for malware
Run a full scan with Windows Security. Unexpected browser pop-ups, unknown programs, or persistently high resource use are warning signs.
7. Check heat and hardware
If the fan is loud, the PC feels hot, or it slows down during games or video calls, dust buildup or overheating may be causing it to throttle performance. Older PCs may also benefit dramatically from an SSD upgrade or more RAM.
A useful rule of thumb:
- Slow immediately after startup: startup apps or updates
- Slow when many browser tabs/apps are open: not enough RAM
- Slow opening files or booting: hard drive/storage issue
- Slow all the time, with loud fans: heat, malware, or CPU-heavy background task
- Slow only online: likely Wi‑Fi or internet—not the PC itself
Need a Slow PC Check?
I can check the hardware, storage, memory, temperatures and startup software, then explain what is actually causing the slowdown.
You will get a clear recommendation on whether the PC is worth upgrading, needs repair, or is better replaced.
